Some guidelines about Prayer Requests which may be helpful:
  • Speak to God as you would a friend and mention the people involved. For example, if you are praying about a situation such as getting a job, pray for yourself, perhaps your family or others involved, and those who are also job seeking.
  • If your prayer involves a perceived wrong or broken relationship, try to consider the other person too, as this will help to bring you peace and will be following the Lord’s words: ‘Forgive us our offences as we forgive those who offend against us’.
  • If your prayer request does not seem to have been granted, be open to the fact that it may not have been for your good or the good of those concerned, or indeed that some additional soul-searching is required.

Story of Zachaeus (Luke 19: 1-10) – the little man with great aspirations – who, whatever his motives, sought the Lord. Zachaeus came, eagerly and without drawing attention to himself, to seek the Lord. He made the effort to see Jesus more clearly by climbing a tree, listening and watching, and thus showing his desire to know more. Jesus acknowledged his presence with a look of love which penetrated Zachaeus’ heart before a word was spoken. Zachaeus responded by changing his way of life and generously repaying those he had previously cheated.

That is prayer, an engagement between Jesus and the sinner (ourselves in Zachaeus’ place) where the goodness of one engulfs and transforms the other. There can only be one response – conversion of heart.
